One gray tick beside a WhatsApp message means the message left your device and reached WhatsApp's service, but it has not been delivered to the recipient's phone or linked devices.
The symbol describes delivery status, not the reason for the delay. It cannot tell you by itself whether the recipient is offline, has connection trouble or has blocked your number.
One gray tick confirms sending, not delivery—and it does not prove that the recipient blocked you.
The WhatsApp check marks explained
A clock icon means the message has not yet been sent, often because your own connection is unavailable. One gray tick means sent. Two gray ticks mean delivered. Two blue ticks mean read when read receipts are available.
In a group, the second gray tick appears after every participant has received the message. The blue ticks appear after every participant has read it, which can make group status changes slower.
Why a message stays on one tick
The recipient's phone may be off, disconnected or unable to receive data. Their linked devices may also be offline. A temporary WhatsApp service problem or a recently changed phone can delay delivery.
Blocking is one possible explanation, but WhatsApp does not identify it as the cause. Privacy settings and missing read receipts do not change a delivered message back to one tick.
- The recipient has no internet connection.
- Their phone and linked devices are off or unavailable.
- The account or phone number recently changed.
- A temporary service problem is delaying delivery.
- Your number may have been blocked.
What you should check
Send a message to another trusted contact. If that message also stays on a clock or one tick, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, reopen WhatsApp and restart the phone.
If other chats work normally, wait. Repeatedly deleting, resending or calling will not force delivery and can create unnecessary pressure for the recipient.
One tick versus no blue ticks
Two gray ticks with no blue ticks is a different situation: the message was delivered, but it may not have been opened or read receipts may be disabled.
Open Message Info on a message you sent to see the delivery and read details that WhatsApp makes available. The exact information depends on the chat type and privacy settings.
