WhatsApp read receipts use check marks to show what happened after you pressed Send. The icons distinguish a message waiting to send, a message sent, a message delivered and a message read.
They are useful, but they are not complete proof of what another person saw or intended. Connection problems, privacy choices and group-chat rules can change what appears.
Two blue ticks indicate reading only when receipts are available; missing blue ticks do not automatically mean a message was ignored.
Clock, one tick, two ticks and blue ticks
A clock means the message has not yet left your device. One gray tick means it was sent. Two gray ticks mean it reached the recipient's phone or linked devices. Two blue ticks mean it was read when read receipts are active.
Voice messages have an additional opened or played state. WhatsApp's Message Info screen can show the delivery, reading or listening details available for a message you sent.
Why blue ticks may be missing
You or the recipient may have disabled read receipts in Privacy settings. The recipient may not have opened the conversation, either person may have connection problems, or the recipient may have blocked you.
An incorrect date or time setting can also affect receipt information. None of these possibilities should be treated as proof that someone deliberately ignored a message.
How to turn read receipts off
Open WhatsApp Settings, choose Privacy and turn Read Receipts off. When you disable the option, you also stop seeing read receipts from other people in individual chats and lose visibility into who viewed your status.
WhatsApp states that read receipts cannot be disabled for group chats or for voice-message playback. Those exceptions help explain why receipt behavior may look inconsistent across conversations.
Read receipts in groups
In a group, the second gray tick appears when everyone has received the message, and blue ticks appear when everyone has read it. Open Message Info to see the participant-level details available to you.
For important business or support communication, do not use a blue tick as the only confirmation. Ask for a clear reply or move the action into a system with accountable ownership.
A read receipt confirms an app state. It does not confirm understanding, agreement or completion of a requested action.
