The WhatsApp six-digit code is a temporary registration code used to confirm that you control the phone number being added to WhatsApp. It commonly arrives by SMS when you register a number on a new phone or reinstall the app.
The code is unique to that registration attempt. It is different from a chat's security code and from any password or passkey you may add to protect your account.
Never share a WhatsApp registration code; an unexpected code can mean that someone entered your number.
When WhatsApp sends the code
WhatsApp sends a registration code after a phone number is entered during account setup. Depending on the available options, the code may arrive by SMS or through a phone call. Enter it only in the official WhatsApp app while completing a registration you started.
Do not guess repeated codes. Too many failed attempts can introduce a waiting period. If a code does not arrive, confirm the country code and phone number, wait for the in-app timer and use only the resend options shown by WhatsApp.
What an unexpected code means

Secure the account after an unexpected request
Check Linked Devices in WhatsApp settings and sign out of anything you do not recognize. Add an email address where the app offers account recovery, and enable the strongest account-protection option available to you, such as a passkey or two-step verification.
