Does WhatsApp Notify Screenshots?

For an ordinary text conversation, image, profile or status, WhatsApp does not provide a Snapchat-style screenshot alert. Device and operating-system behavior can change, but a normal capture should not create a notification inside the chat.

That does not make sharing the screenshot appropriate. Messages can contain private, personal or confidential information, and consent still matters even when the app does not notify the sender.

What happens with View Once media

View Once photos and videos are intended to disappear after they are opened. Meta says WhatsApp prevents screenshots of View Once messages as an added privacy layer.

Because the capture is blocked, you should not expect the same screenshot-notification behavior used by some other messaging products. Screen recording or capture behavior can also depend on the device and current app version.

Do not use another device to photograph View Once content. The technical restriction reflects the sender's expectation that the media is temporary.

WhatsApp versus Messenger

Meta operates both WhatsApp and Messenger, but their features are not identical. Screenshot notifications announced for disappearing Messenger chats should not be assumed to apply to standard WhatsApp conversations.

When privacy matters, check the exact product, message type and current settings rather than relying on a rule remembered from another app.

A safer screenshot habit

Ask permission before saving or sharing a private conversation. Crop out unrelated messages, phone numbers and profile photos, and use device markup to redact confidential information.

For workplace communication, follow the organization's data-handling rules. A screenshot can create a new copy outside the controls and retention settings of the original chat.
